Thyme, botanically known as Thymus vulgaris, is a perennial garden herb that has been employed since ancient times for medicinal and culinary uses.
Thyme tea, rich in volatile oils, minerals, beneficial phenols and flavonoids, is a healthy beverage choice1 tablespoon dried thyme leaves alone meet 54% of vitamin K in one day, 2% of vitamin C, 2% of vitamin A, 17% of iron, 5% of calcium and 10% of manganese.

Commonly praised as a weight loss tea, this herbal remedy can suppress the appetite, yet still boost energy and deliver valuable nutrients, leading to less overeating and snacking between meals. The compounds found in this tea can also optimize metabolism, which can help in fat burning and weight loss efforts.

A cup of thyme tea contains calcium, chromium, iron, magnesium, manganese, potassium, and selenium. It also contains flavonoids, vitamins B-complex, C and D, tannins and carotene among other components.

The next time you have a cold or cough, try a cup of thyme tea. The University of Maryland Medical Center says it can help treat bronchitis and relieve coughs, and states that thyme has been approved for this use by the German Commission E, which evaluates safety and efficacy of herbal preparations in Germany. Drugs.com concurs, saying that extracts from thyme have shown relaxant and bronchodilatory effects.

Thyme is a Mediterranean herb with dietary, medicinal, and ornamental uses. Researchers at the University of Belgrade, Serbia, found that an aqueous extract obtained from wild thyme reduced blood pressure.

Thyme is known for its antibacterial properties and it might have a future as an acne-fighting ingredient. When thyme is steeped in alcohol for days or weeks, it turns into a solution known as a tincture. Researchers in the U.K. have tested the effects of thyme tinctures on acne.
In the one study done on thyme tincture, the findings were impressive. This natural herb preparation fought pimples better than antiacne products, which included benzoyl peroxide. Time will tell if this remedy is an effective acne treatment.

Among the powerful compounds in Thyme, carvacrol has been found to exert a positive effect on mood. It increases levels of dopamine and serotonin – the neurotransmitters that regulate motivation, drive and overall mood. Consuming this herb regularly or diffusing the essential oil in an aromatherapy burner can promote feelings of relaxation and well-being.
Thyme helps with hair growth by improving blood circulation to the scalp. Applying thyme essential oil, or a mixture containing thyme in it helps facilitate delivery of essential nutrients to the scalp, thus encouraging hair growth. Thyme also prevents hairfall and thinning of hair, and is also effective in the treatment of dandruff, due to its antibacterial properties.
