Among the most common symptoms of depression are: fatigue, tiredness, low energy and sleeplessness or insomnia.

The Romans used honey to make them happy apart from deriving many other healthy benefits. Honey is sweet and contains natural sugar. When taken, it gives instant energy and many change one’s mood and depressed feelings.

When the body is out of tune, the mind loses its vitality and focus. Honey contains kaempferol and quercetin which greatly improve health of the brain.

Sleep disturbances or insomnia, both in adults and teenagers, are considered to be the hallmark of depression. Honey contains an amino acid called tryptophan which induces sleep. Serotonin is a hormone which helps the body and mind to relax by inducing the brain to pass the signals of sleep. When we take honey before bed time, the amino acid tryptophan enters the brain and forms serotonin. Thus taking honey reduces or helps to cure insomnia and may prove helpful in curing depression.

Apart from many other health benefits and general boosting of the immunity system, honey works best as instant energizer and treating sleep disorders. Honey is a great mood lifter and can be taken on its own, or mixed with tea, water, milk, yoghurt and any other fresh juice drink.

Honey is not a cure for anxiety. In fact, eating too much honey or any simple sugar may exacerbate levels of anxiety, according to psychologist Edmund J. Bourne in his book, "The Anxiety and Phobia Workbook."
